Public art, a political gesture?

CONFERENCE APERITIF #7

Conference Adults
  • 15.02.2020 11:00 - 12:30

Of all the different kinds of modern art, public art is certainly the most controversial. It is not the placement of a sculpture, the creation of a painting, or an urban design layout that is the subject of such fierce debates. For what reasons, good or bad? Does modern art instinctively seek to provoke? Are our societies irrevocably resistant to modern art? Or is it rather that public art is inseparable from the nature of the societies that produce it? Using some iconic examples (Buren, McCarthy, etc.) and some well-known local sites, this conference will help us understand the political” distinctiveness (in the etymological sense i.e. of or relating to a city”) of public art.

With Pierre-Olivier Rollin, director of BPS22.
