“Tombée de métier”: contemporary tapestry

APERITIF CONFERENCES

Conference Adults
  • 11.12.2021 11:00 - 12:30

The art of tapestry has existed since antiquity. It saw an incredible expansion in the 14th century, thanks in particular to its utilitarian qualities: thermal insulation for rooms.
It underwent a decline from the end of the 18th century due to a lack of artistic renewal. Some artists have nevertheless restored it to its former glory since the second half of the 20th century. This was the case of the Force Murale group in 1947, for example. Since then, tapestry has carved itself a choice place in contemporary creation.
The conference addresses this latest stage in the evolution of tapestry: how and why are today’s artists interested in this technique and what is tapestry’s place in current textile creation?
