MENS SANA IN CORPORE...

ORLAN, NOTRE-DAME À LA ROSE HOSPITAL MUSEUM, LESSINES

Hors-les-murs

Mens Sana in Corpore… was the second BPS22 exhibition at the Notre Dame à la Rose Hospital. A selection of works by the artist ORLAN was distributed across the different rooms of the museum.
ORLAN, born in Saint-Etienne, France, in 1947, gave her first performances in the mid-1960s and used her body as an artistic medium. She thus became one of the precursors of the genre in Europe. A multidisciplinary artist, ORLAN diversified techniques and mediums to explore issues of feminine identity. She did so by violating the Western vision of the body which became, according to her, a site of public debate’.

Various themes explored in the museum were brought into the present day through the display of a contemporary contrast. The exhibition, entitled Mens Sana in Corpore… from the well-known saying A sound mind in a sound body’, brought various themes explored in the museum into the present day by displaying a contemporary counterpoint.
