MENS SANA IN CORPORE...ORLAN, NOTRE-DAME À LA ROSE HOSPITAL MUSEUM, LESSINES
- Hors-les-murs
Mens Sana in Corpore... was the second BPS22 exhibition at the Notre Dame à la Rose Hospital. A selection of works by the artist ORLAN was distributed across the different rooms of the museum.
ORLAN, born in Saint-Etienne, France, in 1947, gave her first performances in the mid-1960s and used her body as an artistic medium. She thus became one of the precursors of the genre in Europe. A multidisciplinary artist, ORLAN diversified techniques and mediums to explore issues of feminine identity. She did so by violating the Western vision of the body which became, according to her, 'a site of public debate'.
Various themes explored in the museum were brought into the present day through the display of a contemporary contrast. The exhibition, entitled Mens Sana in Corpore... from the well-known saying 'A sound mind in a sound body', brought various themes explored in the museum into the present day by displaying a contemporary counterpoint.
